Posting here an announcement made by Blayze on RoKWorld yesterday.
Hello, everyone.
I guess it’s time that we put an end to some of the rumors that have been going around the various forums. I will try to explain things as best I can. First, yes, there is a new version of the game on the horizon. It is being built by several former staff members who all have the same vision for RoK and what we felt it could and should be.
The RoK: Revolution staff has been developing the realms as you know it for half a decade. Even before the original game went offline, many of us discussed the unlikelihood of RoK reaching its full potential without a comprehensive overhaul of programming and policy - Realms of Kaos: Revolution is that overhaul. It is the original gameplay, the original ideas, the original areas, and most importantly, the original PEOPLE, but reimagined and reborn without the restrictions that hobbled the development of the original version.
From these discussions came the idea for a revival of the game. A game that will build on the RoK we had, that we helped create, and then move forward with new ideas, areas, storylines and items, and, together with the players, create new, innovative ideas and changes that will make the game unique in its own right. The initial staffing of this game will be with experienced and creative people whose talents have been proven in the past but were severely restricted by the limitations imposed on them by the "old RoK'. Lack of updates, FTP access and upload capabilities, server failures, as well as several other problems that basically assured that the game would stagnate and some people would move on, frustrated by the inability to see their creations come to life.
We have spoken to several of these people and will be speaking to several more, but so far we believe we have assembled a first rate team of experienced gamebuilders. Much of the recently replaced staff are involved and we have managed to hunt down and offer positions to various names some of you will surely remember. Montag, You, and Pinch are just a few of the people who have graciously signed on as part of the team and have already begun doing the things that they do so well. We've also put forth considerable effort trying to track down all the major contributors of the past to ensure they all know that we respect their contributions and have the opportunity to tell us what they want done with their works. We felt this was appropriately done before we announced anything so there was no pressure on anyone when making a decision. Everyone we've spoken to so far has either given their full support or has been so excited about the team we're working with that they've joined us! We still haven't been able to find contact information for a couple of people but we will continue to try and find them.
Many things will be handled differently as we try to avoid the mistakes made in the past. A new ban and punishment system that is fair, uniform, and publicly displayed if you decide that would be best. Ban summaries could be posted in the player forums and if someone wished to view the entire log they only have to ask and they will be sent a full copy. Or, if you prefer, all full version ban logs could be posted. We will also include strict controls and tools to hamper and hopefully remove theft from the game as well as regular in-game public meetings and question and answer periods with staff and players. We also have in place a full staff rule book that will be published to the public. We feel everyone should know the rules staff are supposed to follow and should call us on it if we fail them. Additionally, we are going to use a full appeal system where you can have multiple people review your abuse decision, eventually rising all the way up to the administration level. Finally, we're using a voting system on game policy issues both in staff and in the public.
Player contributions will be a big part of the new system. We have many exciting and innovative plans that will enable the players to be more involved with game development and policy. Junior staff positions that will allow players to work their way to full staff on their merit alone….no favoritism….no appointments. A stable server capable of handling up to 2500 players without crashes and lag, and fitted with extensive logging systems that records all staff actions from item creation logs right down to who handed what item to whom. This logging system is built to prevent any abuse of power and makes all staff completely responsible for their actions.
There are many more features and changes to come. RoK: Revolution will also feature a variety of new in-game offers to be made available in the near future. Many exciting new ideas that have been on hold for years will finally be available for your enjoyment but the underlying theme is to make this YOUR game. To move forward with RoK with the players as part of the team. You will have a voice in much of what we do. You will have the opportunity to earn a staff position on your skills alone, with an equal chance for everyone. We are also considering a "Player Council," where players could be asked to elect their own representatives that will act as a liaison between staff and players. The council could have access to staff boards and would have a voice and a vote, in staff decisions.
You will be able to see your ideas and creations come to life if you’re talented and have the dedication required to make it happen. Most importantly, you will have the chance to again become part of a close, tight knit community that all gather for the love of the game and the chance to play your character in a fair equal setting where you can earn your items, weapons, and character customization in game. Many major and minor issues will be posted on the website for the players to vote on so player opinions may be considered before they are implemented.
I have thoroughly discussed this with the staff, and we want everyone to know that we are not attempting to compete with the original game and we wish them nothing but the best of luck in their endeavors. While we have our roots firmly planted in RoK, this will grow into a completely separate game with new areas, new artwork, new quests and monsters that will be created over time as the game progresses. This project is something we’re all excited about and we now have the opportunity to create. No ill will…no hard feelings. It’s entirely your choice if you decide to get involved. We will eventually be advertising the game on numerous websites in the hope of attracting new players to the game and expanding our playerbase. If some of you decide not to play then that’s fine too. It's up to you.
All we want to do is keep our vision of RoK alive in our own way. We are now releasing our new web presence where we will ask for your input into what you would like to see, or what you feel needs changing as well as some immediate features we will ask you to vote on, like the ban display mentioned previously. Everyone is invited to contribute in any way they wish and the message board there will be a truly open forum for discussion about game matters and your suggestions.
We had hoped to have our client completely ready for you to login to before we released any information because we didn’t want to make everyone a bunch of promises until you could see for yourself what we're all about and how serious we are about bringing our vision of RoK to life. However, we realised that we wanted to get started right away with your input and contributions, and we also need some artists, bulders, etc. that we would like to speak with, and possibly bring in on the ground floor, and it would be impossible to ask for submissions or applications without letting everyone know what our plans were.
We are confident that we will have the client ready for download, and the server up and running for you to log in and play in the next couple of weeks, or possibly even sooner, depending on a few things, especially, and most importantly, your contributions.
Our temporary website is up and available to you as well as our official forums. Both can be found at: www.rokrevolution.com
Pinch is currently putting our full website together and we'll unveil it soon. Thank you to the RoKWorld staff for allowing us to post on their MB but out of respect for their bandwidth, I would ask that you post any questions, suggestions or mudslinging on our MB by clicking on the above link.
Thanks for listening.
